History

In the early years from 1912 to 1924, this area was a lay Presbyterian Mission Field served by dedicated students and a lay minister, David Milne, who farmed in the area. The first ordained minister, Rev. E.R. May, arrived in 1924 and remained until 1928. Services were held in the community hall until the present United Church was built in 1927. No doubt the Rev. May was instrumental in the building of the church. Dr. Endicott was present to assist a pioneer farmer, Alex Dobson, with the ceremony of laying the corner stone.

The contractor for the building, Wm. J. Dier, still lives in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He was assisted by local carpenters; namely, Wm. Tait (who still lives in our village), Alvin Curris and others. The hauling of gravel and much of the labor was supplied gratis by local residents. It was necessary to borrow money from the Home Mission Board but this was paid off before the end of 1940. The congregation were happy to participate in the burning of the mortgage. Several times in succeeding years it was necessary to borrow money for major repairs, but in recent years our church has been free of debt due to the continued support of interested members and adherents.

Many changes have taken place inside the building and many new fixtures added due mainly to the efforts of the United Church women. We have also been fortunate in the number of people who have served gratis in other ways such as: teaching Sunday School, leading the choir, playing the organ, keeping the records, caring for the grounds, etc.

Our church bell was presented to us by the Canadian Pacific Railway Co. in 1963. It had previously been in use on Engine #1207, a passenger train which serviced our area. The dedication ceremony took place on January 22, 1964, with Fred Cooke, Roadmaster (a previous local agent for Codette) and George Nugent, the local agent, representing the Canadian Pacific Railway. The bell was accepted in God's service on behalf of the congregation by the Rev. Clark McCutcheon, Mrs. Jean Turner (Clerk of Session) and W.E. Mills (Chairman of the Board of Stewards).
